235th Marine Corps Birthday
On
November 13th, 2010 the detachment
celebrated the 235th birthday of our beloved Marine Corps
at the American Legion Post 64
in Salisbury. After
hors d'oeuvres and drinks the celebration started with a short greeting by
Commandant Andy Bouma and a prayer by Chaplain Jim Siegel. The dinner was
prepared by ladies from the Legion and consisted of crab cakes, fried chicken,
roast beef, string beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. After dinner detachment
member Ralph Capen read General Lejeune's 1921 birthday message and then Senior
Vice Commandant Bob Miller showed a video of the Commandant of the Marine Corps
(General James Amos') birthday message.
The
sea stories and camaraderie continued well into the evening.
What better way to end a magnificent evening. Semper Fidelis.

Sandy Bouma, Deborah Patey (family), Kim Wheatley (Fran's daughter), and Fran Hearthway (sold baked goods for the Detachment) in Powellville where the Ruritan & Fire Company were selling BBQ chicken. This must have been early in the day cause those item's on the table look soooo good.. I would doubt anything on the table had to be packed up by the end of the day. The ladies are looking good also. |
Detachment Marines and friends were also busy on May 1st. They were at the Arthur W. Perdue Stadium pouring beer for a tasting event which featured over 100 beers and ales. Who in their right mind would task Marines to handle something like that. Sue Ellen Wilkins and Mary pictured below must have been the designated drivers for our Marines.

Detachment member's were in attendance at the 28th Annual Salisbury Festival that was held April 23 through April 25, 2010 at Riverwalk Park. This was a recruiting effort and a chance to meet the public and let them know what the Marine Corps League is all about. Reports indicate that a few inquiries about membership in the Detachment were received, a half dozen young men stopped by and said they were going in the Corps or wanted to go in, and numerous family members of Marines currently in harm's way stopped by for a hug and to thank the detachment members for their service. Also, a man and his wife stopped by because they saw the name of our Detachment on the banner. They told Marine Ed Hearthway that they had met the Cohee family shortly after "Trae" was killed and that they were impressed (at that time) with the family's commitment to our country and the Marine Corps.
